The DNxHD license key enables in-camera recording of 1920 x 1080 (16:9) Avid DNxHD encoded MXF files onto SxS PRO cards. It is free of charge and pre-installed on all ALEXA Studio cameras. The DNxHD recording option can be activated and de-activated by loading or deleting the license file on the camera. With an installed DNxHD license key, ALEXA users can choose between MXF/DNxHD and QuickTime/ProRes recording.
SUP 6.0 adds DNxHD recording capability to ALEXA and ALEXA Plus models. SUP 6.1 provides the DNxHD upgrade for ALEXA M and ALEXA Studio. The available codecs are Avid DNxHD 145 (8 bit 4:2:2) and DNxHD 220x (10 bit 4:2:2)*. A 10 bit 4:4:4 DNxHD codec will be provided as a free of charge update to all DNxHD license holders in one of the following SUP releases.
* Note: DNxHD is a constant bit rate codec. Depending on the project frame rate, the codecs are actually called DNxHD 115 or 175x at 23.976 and 24 fps, DNxHD 120 or 185x for 25 fps and DNxHD 175 or 220x for 29.97 fps.
ALEXA cameras record DNxHD encoded images together with sound and embedded metadata in an MXF container using a file structure according to Operational Pattern 1a (OP1a) with frame-wrapping. ALEXA's MXF/DNxHD material can be edited in Avid Media Composer Version 5.5 and later for Apple and Windows 32 and 64 bit operating systems without transcoding.
Requirements: ALEXA and ALEXA Plus with SUP 6.0 or later, ALEXA Studio and ALEXA M with SUP 6.1 or later.
